Somerset Rural Workspace
Wheelrights is a small but characterful stone building embedded within the Somerset landscape. Constructed in warm Cary stone beneath a clay tiled roof, it carries the quiet strength and simplicity of the region’s rural architecture. Most recently home to artisan cheese making, the building is now being reimagined for its next chapter.
The project carefully removes a series of unsympathetic additions, revealing the integrity of the original structure and restoring clarity to its form. In their place, a modest contemporary extension is introduced to the rear, discreet in scale and respectful in its relationship to the existing building.
Light plays a central role in the transformation. Low profile rooflights and a reinstated timber window bring daylight deep into the interior, while a refined new entrance subtly elevates the building’s presence. The material palette balances heritage and craft, with repaired stonework and clay tiles sitting alongside zinc cladding and slimline metal glazing.

The result is a considered evolution rather than a dramatic change. Wheelrights retains its grounded, agricultural character while becoming a flexible and inspiring rural workspace. The project celebrates continuity, material honesty and the quiet confidence of Somerset’s built heritage.
