Perthshire Farmhouse
Woldon have recently completed the sensitive renovation and extension of a traditional farmhouse set within a Perthshire estate context. The project forms part of a broader approach to estate-led regeneration, carefully enhancing the existing building while safeguarding its historic character and long-term use within the rural landscape.
The design reworks the original farmhouse with precision, rationalising internal volumes to create a new double-height space at its core through the selective removal of the constrained upper floor. A new bedroom wing extends discreetly to the rear, connected by a modest stairwell that clearly distinguishes old from new while maintaining the integrity of the original building.
Key interventions include the formation of a new gable end through the raising of the rear roof, the introduction of a tall east-facing window to improve daylighting, and the careful refinement of the farmhouse envelope. Repaired slate roofing and high-performance hybrid windows combine traditional materials with contemporary standards of durability and energy efficiency, ensuring the building’s continued role within the estate for generations to come.

Externally, a landscaped courtyard mediates between the farmhouse and the surrounding grounds, creating a sheltered, purposeful setting framed by stone retaining walls and steps leading to the lawn beyond. The proposals build on previously consented design principles and were developed in collaboration with Galbraith Group, All Ecology, and Narro Associates. Rooted in the local landscape and its architectural heritage, the project ensures the farmhouse remains a long-term, resilient asset within the estate, balancing historic character with the practicalities of contemporary rural life.
