In Conversation with Barney O’Dowd: Shaping Design and Heritage in the Cotswolds
In the picturesque landscape of the Cotswolds, where rolling hills meet timeless architecture, a creative force is at work. Leading the office is Barney O’Dowd, Cotswolds Director of Woldon Architects, whose journey from architect to associate to director is as inspiring as the historic backdrop that frames his work.
Barney’s story is one rooted in a deep connection to the Cotswold valleys, where he spent his youth immersed in the rich heritage and vernacular architecture that defines the region. From an early age, he knew that his path lay in design, and as he embarked on his architectural journey, he found himself drawn to the interplay between contemporary innovation and traditional charm.
“I think it all stemmed from growing up in the Cotswolds,” Barney reflects. “The juxtaposition between new and old has always excited me—the challenge of making them sing alongside each other. Personally, I always knew I wanted to be a designer.”
With a keen eye for problem-solving and a penchant for creative expression, Barney’s career trajectory was marked by steady progression. From navigating the complexities of large residential projects to overcoming challenges in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, his journey to the role of Cotswolds Director was both rewarding and illuminating.
A true testament to Barney’s resilience & leadership is the growth of his network and local professionals to assist in delivering projects designed with the human perspective, built to stand the test of time. “We always like to promote sustainable design wherever possible, always being mindful of a fabric first approach to reduce energy consumption and provide an economical building to run and operate.”

As Cotswolds Director, Barney’s responsibilities extend beyond project management to encompass office-wide leadership and creative oversight. Yet, at the heart of his approach lies a simple philosophy: make the design process fun.
“I believe that if people are having fun, their creativity flourishes,” Barney shares. “Positive energy is contagious, and it translates into projects that resonate with clients and communities alike. We love to work through different creative mediums; model making, hand drawings, water colours and diagramming.”
Barney’s passion for working contemporary vision into heritage locations comes across through all sectors of Woldon’s work. With an established portfolio focusing on estates, and private clients, it is the commercial delivery, which is taking the forefront of Barney’s drive.
A recent collection of estate offices have been completed, a process which Barney finds enticing “They often start with an estate master plan vision, understanding all the workings of the estate and distilling or consolidating and streamlining proposals into one office and thereby releasing opportunities for further development elsewhere on the estate.” Barney muses “Finding a creative and adaptive reuse for existing heritage assets but realized in a contemporary way, is where I draw a lot of enjoyment from”.
Indeed, Barney’s passion for design extends far beyond the confines of the office. From his own personal home—a perpetual work in progress—to the diverse array of projects he oversees, his commitment to excellence is unwavering. Barney admits “A classic architect’s house is never finished but the journey is ongoing”.
Looking ahead, Barney sees boundless opportunities for the Cotswold office to thrive. With new residential and commercial projects on the horizon, as well as the emergence of interior design services, the future is brimming with promise.
“We have some wonderful new private client instructions for new residential properties which are really exciting, along with some incredibly exciting commercial opportunities coming forward, which will be the start of a five-to-ten-year plan of delivery. With the running success of our Interior Design department, we are creating a new floor in our Cotswolds office, designated for samples and creative collaboration for our clients.”
“We’re excited to see how we can continue to grow and evolve,” Barney concludes. “The journey this far has been incredibly rewarding, and we’re eager to see where the next chapter takes us.”
As the sun sets over the rolling hills of the Cotswolds, Barney O’Dowd’s vision for design and heritage shines brightly, illuminating a path forward guided by creativity, collaboration, and a deep reverence for the timeless beauty of the region.
