Madresfield Estate Office
Woldon were commissioned to breathe new life into a long-unused Grade II listed stable block, creating a vibrant Visitor Hub and estate office at the heart of the Madresfield Estate, set against the rolling backdrop of the Malvern Hills.
As the estate grows and diversifies, a centralised, functional and welcoming office was needed. The design celebrates the historic fabric, retaining original timber partitions, stable bays and the L-shaped courtyard plan while introducing flexible office spaces, meeting areas, and a dedicated hub for visitors and community events. Large industrial-style windows flood interiors with natural light, while subtle contemporary interventions, including Brise Soleil panels, provide comfort, control solar gain, and create a play of light and shadow that enriches the historic spaces.
The Playroom and visitor facilities have been sensitively modernised to support guided tours, community activities, and estate events, all while preserving the legibility of the building’s original plan. Interiors combine the warmth and craftsmanship of the heritage fabric with modern functionality and accessibility, ensuring a calm, inviting environment for staff and visitors alike.
Externally, the stable yard has been transformed into an attractive and functional arrival space, with careful hard and soft landscaping interventions, discreet parking, and enhanced connections to the surrounding parkland. Every repair and addition, from brick parapets to contemporary metalwork, has been considered to complement the estate’s rich history.
The completed project secures the future of this remarkable building, creating a lively, flexible centre for administration, visitor engagement, and community activity. It is a space that honours the past, embraces the present, and opens the door to new possibilities for the estate.
