Case Study - Farmhouse
Replacement House
Located between the Falmouth and Helford estuaries in Cornwall, lies the Argal Home Farm. The proposal replaces a compromised and poorly laid-out farmhouse with an efficiently laid-out contemporary house of 350sqm. The proposal was developed to embrace the best elements of Cornish farmhouse design with careful consideration for the client’s requirements for a contemporary home.
Contemporary Vernacular
The local area has a strong tradition of farmhouses following a simple rectangular or “L” shape plan often with gable ends. The new house seeks to continue this distinct Cornish tradition. Key principles of local vernacular design have been incorporated. The external walls are finished in coursed local granite with cast stone reveals and the roof is clad in Cornish slate.
Phased Project
The project is a further phase of redevelopment at Argal Home Farm, following construction of a contemporary workshop and conversion of existing barns to form studios for the resident design studios and other local businesses. Farmhouse is due for competition Winter 2021

Cost Control
Woldon works within a commercial environment where all Clients expect projects to be delivered within the cost parameters given to the design team.
This understanding of cost control contributes to our success as a practice. At the inception of any project we will discuss the level of product as a clear understanding of the costs from the outset is imperative. During the design process we have continuous discussions with the Client and Design Team to ensure that the design not only develops within the cost plan but provides best value and the right product.
