The Newt in Somerset
Extension of honey processing facility and creation of guest workshop space for The Newt in Somerset estate.
Responding to the successful growth of the estate’s bee-keeping operations, Woldon have completed a redesign and extension of the Newt’s bee-keeping facilities. The buildings are used for honey processing, from extraction through to jarring and hive storage.
The estate’s bee-keeping program focuses on chemical-free methods and an holistic approach to hive management. Extensive woodland at The Newt provides habitat to a range of wild bee colonies.
The honey house and its garden also provide a learning space, supporting the estates programme of bee safaris and workshops on bee-keeping skills such as skep-making – the traditional woven straw beehive used for sustainable harvesting of honey.
Materially, the extension continues the use of Hadspen stone, dry-jointed to express clearly the new element and provide little niches between the stones that attract wildlife including bees. The profile section of the old and new buildings is identical, with a moulded zinc channel expressing the transition between the two. A landscape picture window in the extension frames a view into the heart of the processing space.
Services provided Woldon included architecture, interior design, cost consultancy, contract administration and Principal Designer.
